About
Jason deCaires Taylor is renowned for creating immersive underwater art installations that blend art, nature, and environmental consciousness. His innovative work reimagines the underwater realm as a public art space, earning him the title of the “Jacques Cousteau of the art world.” Taylor’s installations are not static sculptures but living, evolving ecosystems, bringing art to life beneath the waves.
He gained international acclaim in 2006 with the creation of the world’s first underwater sculpture park off the coast of Grenada in the West Indies. This groundbreaking project was recognised by National Geographic as one of the “Top 25 Wonders of the World.” Since then, Taylor has collaborated with local communities around the globe, creating a series of Underwater Museums. These spaces redefine our understanding of the underwater world by assigning it the same cultural and ecological importance as traditional museums, emphasising preservation, conservation, and education.
Taylor’s installations explore pressing global issues such as climate change, environmental activism, migration, and sustainability. These underwater museums offer visitors a unique view of our planet’s marine life, reminding us of our interconnectedness with the natural world and the critical role we play in protecting it. Often Taylor’s sculptural works depict local community members and reflect unique relationships with surrounding coastal environments, before evolving into vibrant new ecosystems over time.
Each installation is designed to collaborate with nature, using eco-friendly materials that encourage marine growth. The artworks transform barren or damaged seabeds into flourishing habitats, symbolising both human fragility and our deep connection to the natural world. Taylor’s work is not only an example of successful marine conservation but it also serves as a powerful reminder of our dependence on nature and the need for its protection.
